An abundance of citrus…

For the third time I went and picked up fruit from my brother-in-law’s family compound of interconnected yards. (Which in years past was the normal. Families sharing the land and the work. And is still the case as I observed as Ken helped his uncle harvest and trim the trees).  I needed to juice the tangerines that were split so that they would not rot or mold and the smell of the fresh citrus made it easy to keep up the juicing. My husband documented the process in his wonderful photos.

Beans and Squash

Planted beans and squash today in beds in the side yard. And started lettuce, peppers, capers, and flowers indoors.

Bright and Sunny, or at least the fruit is…

My brother-in-law, Ken, sent a text saying that there was a lot of fruit available at his house for the taking. I went last Friday and picked up some. We ate some and juiced the rest of the lemons and froze the juice in ice cube trays for future cooking or lemonade. I took the rest of the fruit to my Food Preservation class. I guessed rightly that there I would find a group that would not let the fruit go to waste.
But I decided I wanted some more and so today I went and came home with even more than the last time! So for the next couple of days I will be figuring out what to do with lemons, tangerines, and kumquats!

Planting Some New and Some Old

The chickens got out on Saturday and had a grand old time in the vegetable garden. The newly sprouted peas and beets were the appetizers. They went on to scratch for bugs along the fence and finished the feast with some strawberry plants. So today I replanted the peas and beets and put out some new seeds.

Arugula and mustard are sharing one bed. Swiss Chard and Spinach rows are alternating in another bed. Lettuce seeds are mixed in the herb bed and the Calendula is edging the herb bed. Praying for rain and the gate to stay closed!

Peas and Beets

Planted seeds on February 23rd after an overnight soaking. This followed a day of amending and turning over beds.
