Fall Fruit – Before and After

The flavors of fall are here at the Farmers’ Market (although I can still buy peaches, too!) and I was inspired to stock away some of my favorites.
The apples are Golden Delicious and I made the Spiced Apples from Well-Preserved by Eugenia Bone. This is the second time I have made these apples and I ran out of them recently when I made muffins so I am glad I now have seven jars of them on hand. I also made another batch of pears as I really like that recipe, too.

A Pair Canning Pears

A friend came over today so that we could can and bake together. The pictures in this post were taken by her with her fun and creative eye. What a fun and very productive morning we had. We made homemade English Muffins and then canned some Pear, Port and Thyme conserve from the book “Well Preserved” by Eugenia Bone. Her book is great. The recipes for canning and freezing are good but even better are her suggestions for using the the main recipe. I love this sauce with pork which is what we had for dinner last night.

A Drying Birthday?

For my birthday this year I asked for a dehydrator and have been busy ever since drying things out.

This gift was prompted by my experiments with making fruit leather. I was spreading the fruit purée in jelly roll pans lined with parchment paper and cycling the oven on and off on it’s lowest setting and then placing the trays in front of a fan. Now I can use the special tray in the dehydrator and make the fruit leather so much more efficiently.

To date I have dried peach slices, apple slices, blueberries, strawberries, ginger slices, mango slices, pineapple slices, figs, carrot slices, and various fruit purées.

Peach fruit leather, yum!

Pizza Party

I recently purchased pizza stones for use on the grill. What fun to be able to make pizza and not heat up the oven in the summer!

Clockwise from upper left: fresh tomato, garlic, and basil pizza, standard pepperoni pizza, and gorgonzola and pear pizza.
