Nice Slice

My recent bread making attempts have gone reasonably well (except for the day I thought I had turned the oven temperature down but as was obvious 30 minutes later, I had not!)

My goal with bread making is to bake a loaf of whole wheat sandwich bread that will stay soft for several days – and of course, tastes good.

Italian Style Pork Roast

20110608-100856.jpg

My first use of fennel pollen! I butterflied a pork roast and spread it with a mixture of chopped rosemary, chopped sage, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and fennel pollen. It was very good but I think next time even more herbs would be good.
This was served with rosemary roasted potatoes, green beans sautéed with garlic, a mixed green salad, and homemade baguettes.
This was a bit of a fancy dinner for a weeknight but a longtime friend was here from Singapore so we needed to celebrate.

Sunday night dinner

Our usual family dinner with three generations in attendance and heard oldest son’s stories of Neil and Chuck…

Salad with apples, asiago cheese, and homemade shallot dressing

Asparagus from the farmers’ market sautéed with butter and homegrown shallots.

And those bratwursts made yesterday cooked with potatoes and homemade sauerkraut. We skipped the traditional “brats and beer” and served a Hart 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and a Monte De Oro 2006 Zinfandel.

A New Vegetable to Try

I have tried sweet potatoes before, of course, but I have never tried to grow them. The new Mother Earth News had an article about growing them so I picked up a couple at the farmers’ market last Friday.

After just a week in the water they have little roots and tiny little slips starting on top. It will be great if they do well and I will have another storage crop to add to my potatoes and winter squash.
