Garden Chores

Many things were begging to be done in my yard this week and Thursday I got to quite a few. The bed shown above is mostly herbs with a few flowers for accent color. The flowers were drying up and the parsley had gone to seed and was turning yellow as well as trying to swamp the bay tree. The thyme was also in need of a good haircut (although it might just need to be ripped out and replanted.  I cut down the parsley and will leave the base of the plant to see if it will come back. I bought another seedling to fill in so that it will look nicer. I also pulled the flowers and have new ones to add for fresh color.

Garden Update

Barbara at Tigers and Strawberries says that the most important thing a gardener needs is a journal. That is one of the reasons for this blog. I am going to try to write down when I plant and when I harvest and how various plants are doing.

Sunday night dinner

starts with dessert…Cherry sorbet
20110529-061611.jpg

The ice cream maker has been stored on top of the refrigerator instead of inside it for quite a few months now. As the weather is warming up and cherries are making their appearance at the farmers’ market right now, I decided to put it back in the freezer.

The cherry sorbet I made was based on the one from the Animal Vegetable Miracle website. I reduced the sugar and added a little bit of allspice due to the book, The Herbal Kitchen, by Kami McBride. I just love the color.

This dessert followed a Sunday night dinner of hamburgers, grilled corn, and fruit. We served the burgers with sparkling wine just for fun!

my plants are dead-headed now

look!

The street side flower bed was looking a little forlorn so I finally got out there and trimmed back the dead blooms. It should be growing really well now that it has received a haircut and new mulch. I can’t wait to see the sages get big like the other ones in my yard. The red one in the center of the bed came as an extra seed growing in a container with a purple sage. It seems to be doing better than the one I actually meant to purchase!

fertilizer factory

We even have our own fertilizer made and distributed locally.

Plus we get some awesome eggs and they do a pretty good job of pest control as well!
