Carrots instead of Beets

Carrots have been planted where the beets were growing. I made homemade planting strips earlier and so the planting of evenly spaced carrots was pretty easy. I am following Pat Welsh’s planting advice and watering with boiling water right after planting to scarify the seeds. This is the first time I have tried her method. She claims to have had seeds sprout within three days.

As a side note, I planted pole beans last Saturday and they are now up. I had to plant them in the house as an in ground planting is not working so well. Is something eating the beans before they can sprout?

Yellow Perfection

The first tomatoes are in! Well, actually I have been eating cherry tomatoes for a quite awhile but somehow those don’t seem to really count. Lemony and sweet with a lovely balance of tomatoey goodness. I could hard stop eating bites as I chopped them up for our salad. Made the tomatoes from the farmers’ market seem bland.

These are the ones who make sure water stations are filled, clean up each afternoon, and made sure that we never ran out of toilet paper! They are busy enough with all of us around but with the addition of 2,000 kids on campus they are the unsung heroes of VBS. Recipe below:
